What Causes Yellowing Headlights?

By John Jansen

What causes yellowing headlights?

Headlights are made of polycarbonate in the cars of today. They were made of glass originally. Polycarbonate.. or plastic .. is much more economical and allows for a greater variation in headlight designs.

Those are the pluses of plastic headlights.

The minus is yellowing headlights.

The plastic used is a porous material and when heated by the sun the pores expand and dirt slips in ... from environmental factors such as acid rain, exhaust, wind blown dust.

These particles along with the UV rays of the sun cause the oxidation of the plastic .. causing it to apprear foggy or as though it is covered by a cloudy film.

This yellowing can be prevented by washing the headlights every three months then waxing them and polishing them with a polish containg a UV polymer. This is what the outer layer of the headlight is covered with.... a UV polymer.. and the polish will restore that and keep your headlights as bright and gleaming as they were when new.

Keeping your vehicle parked in the shade or in a garage will also protect the polymer coating on the headlights.

Should your headlights yellow .. you can restore them by using a headlight restoration kit which tells you how to remove the old UV polymer and recoat the headlights.

It is a process that can be done easily and quickly with an inexpensive kit that can be purchased at any auto parts store ... or even better .. and probably cheaper... right online.

While environmental conditons cause the yellowing of headlights ... it is an easy problem to prevent from happening.. and an easy one to fix without having to resort to your car repair shop to do for you.. thus saving you hundreds of dollars.
