Weathervanes Tell A Story
Weather vanes were first used in ancient Athens,Greece about 48 BC and represented the Greek god Triton..holding a figure of a man's head and torso and a fish tail. From then on weather vanes depicted the time or era they were made in. The ancient Greek people believed the wind had divine power and so used the vanes as an honor that way. Every wealthy landowner had weather vanes atop their estates. In the beginning of the 19th century weather vanes evolved from the pope's order to all churches in Europe to show a cock on the church steeple or spire. Weather vanes with cocks on them were on churches all over Europe as well as America. The early colonists in America favored patriotic figures on the weather vanes. Later sports figures played the part, with famous horses fashioned on the vanes. The first vanes had pennants of cloth on them to depict the wind direction. Those eventually were replaced by metal that was balanced to blow in the wind. Today weather vane makers reproduce those of the past as well as make modern ones to depict the times of today. Weather vanes .. one more tie to our beginnnings. |
