The Reality Of Bottled Water
By Jana Jansen
Bottled water has become a mainstay of our culture. It lines the shelves of stores of all sizes. It is sold in vending machines. It is not cheap. Do you drink bottled water? If so.. there are some facts ... some reality of bottled water ... of which you should become aware. First .. the bottling of water is not regulated in any way unless it is shipped across state lines..therefore most water is bottled and sold in the same state. Because it is not regulated ... there is no way of knowing what conatminants or toxins could be in the water you buy in bottles. All other public water must meeet certain standards of purity to be dispensed to the public.. which of course includes our tap water. The chances are good that your tap water is much cleaner than the bottled water you buy. Of course.. the packaging is such a high seller. It promises sparkling clean clear water.. you can even see how sparkly and clean it is through the clear bottle... which means nothing. You can take a glass of pond water and to the eye it may look very clean. In reality.. we know just how unclean it is because of where it came from. The plastic bottles we buy our water in are filling up landfills all across the country. No incentive of any kind is given in most states to return them... such as deposits as are on pop cans in many states. When you realize the bottles contain nothing better than our tap water.. it seems like an awfully needless assault on our land.. does it not? Now.. try figuring out how much you are paying for that "probably not nearly as clean as it may look" bottled water.. and you will no doubt come up with a cost of anywhere from $1 to $4 per gallon. Does that sound high to you? Perhaps it is the convenience of the bottled water we love so much. Perhaps.. no matter what facts are known .. how much is not proven .. we simply love the illusion of that clean sparkling spring water that beckons us from those shelves. Whatever it is that pushes us to buy it .. bottled water has caused a huge turnaround in public opinion of .. water. Whereas in the past .... we turned on the tap or the hose and took a big gulp of water to quench our thirst .. today the thought of that big gulp out of tap or hose causes a double take. Was it the sight of the bottled water in all its clean sparkling beauty that impressed in our minds the fact that hose or tap water is unhealthy? The reality of bottled water is that it may be much more unhealthy than either the hose or tap water.

Bottled water has always tasted like the water from my back yard water hose. I do not purchase bottle water for the reasons stared in this intel. It produces too much trash to be recycled.....
