Skating On The Pond

Skating on the pond is a memory that lasts forever .. the sights, the sounds, the good healthy winter fun. The lights were always strung just in time for that first really cold snap .. and then the watching and the ice testing began. It did not take long before the ice was thick enough ... safe to be on ... and then ... out came the shovels and out came the gear ...hockey skates and figure skates and hockey sticks and pucks. Everyone took part. One half of the pond was designated for pond hockey when the girls were out .. and what fun to hear the slap of the pucks in contrast to the twirls and the swirls of the "figure skaters" on the other half. A small metal stove served as a great hand warmer and a marshmallow roaster and a hot dog on a stick heater .. but nothing hit the spot like the hot chocolate brought down from the house in a big canteen. What a healthy winter activity skating on the pond provided to everyone and anyone who could get there. Chairs were brought out for those who were just learning to skate. Sleds were brought down for the little ones to ride on. Shovels were always scraping somewhere on the pond. The cold crisp air with the stars glimmering and the moon shining was a perfect night for skating on the pond. The picture as witnessed from the house on the hill was a perfect scene for a Christmas card. The mom's with the little ones and the girls were usually the first to reluctantly admit it was time to go back to the house. That is when the pond hockey game really kicked up speed... across the whole length of the ice. Those memories... skating on the pond.. will never fade far away... and new ones continue to be made as a new generation grows into that healthy outdoor winter activity.. skating on the pond. |
