Michigan's Coastline
Michigan, with its upper and lower peninsulas, has the longest coastline of all the states other than Alaska, having 3,288 miles of shoreline which includes 1,056 miles of island shoreline. Alaska has 6,640 miles of coastline. Michigan's coasts are on four of the Great Lakes, Lake Michigan, Lake Superior, Lake Huron and Lake Erie, with Lake St. Clair and the Detroit River connecting Lake Huron and Lake Erie and the Straits of Mackinac connecting Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. St. Mary's River connects Lake Huron and Lake Superior, with the Soo Locks located there, at Sault Ste. Marie. |
