Lake Superior...the Lake
By Jana Jansen
Lake Superior...simply known to people who live near it as "the lake"... is the greatest, coldest and deepest of the five Great Lakes. It was commemorated in a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow ... part of which reads: By the shores of Gitchee Gummee by the shining Big-Sea-Water, stood the wigwam of Nokomis Daughter of the Moon, Nokomis. Dark behind it rose the forest, rose the balck and gloomy pinetrees, rose the firs with cones upon them; bright before it beat the water, beat the shining Big-Sea-Water. It is a true reflection of the lake .. as you know if you have been there. Lake Superior could hold all four of the other Great Lakes plus Lake Erie three more times, and is larger than South Carolina...which gives you a small idea of its size. It is the largest fresh water lake in the world by surface area, the third largest by volume. Two lakes in Russia have more volume. Once every 20 years its surface freezes over. Growing up alongside Lake Superior was an advantage that was taken for granted until the time came to move away. Then the beauty of the moods of the water and the sight of sky meeting water which gave dreams an endless horizon became a part of my being. Waves on the lake have been recorded as high as thiry feet. Many ships paid the toll of the lake's many ferocious moods... along with many lives of the sailors who plied the decks of the freighters that frequented the lake. The beauty that surrounds the lake is a part of the lake itself.. the pines and craggy shores.. the soft sand beaches..the purely rocky beaches where agates abound. The size of the lake with its surrounding land gives it a kind of oceanic or martitime climate..similar to that found in Nova Scotia...making Lake Superior at times seem more like an inland sea than simply .. a lake. Of course... if you have lived on its shores.. you know it is so much more than a lake. It is Lake Superior ... "the lake". |
