Don't Underestimate Your Child's Intelligence

By Jana Jansen

As parents, we often are inclined to underestimate the intelligence of our children.

From birth to the age of one.. your child is "awakening".

Look back....the degree of development in that one year is amazing.

At one year of age, your child understands much more than you would think. By two he understands everything you tell him.

You of course treat your child as an intelligent human being from the moment of his birth but at two.. it is time to begin applying the teaching of discipline.

What a child could get away with at one as "being cute" is not so "cute" at two.

Trust your child. Teach him and know he is learning. It is a detriment to your child... and punishment for yourself in the long run .. if the teaching does not begin now.

Be persistent and consistent. Your child's ability to absorb is great. It just needs some repeating.

Read to your child. He listens to every word... and is learning with every word.

Talk to him with good correct language. He does not need to be spoken to in "baby talk".

Give him an open cup to drink out of. He can learn to do it. A sippy cup is great for car trips.. not for at the dinner table at this age. Of course he will spill .. it is part of learning. Let him use a small fork when appropriate.

Give him boundaries. He will learn to respect them.

Don't have a "time out" chair. Have a "happy chair". When discipline is called for... put him sitting in the "happy chair" until the chair makes him happy again. It works wonders.

Teach your child... giving credit to his intelligence..knowing he can and will learn what you teach him. After all .... that is why you are his parent.
