Common Sense Teaching
By Jana Jansen
The Montessori method of teaching young children is based on common sense .. which is teaching children the basic fundamental concepts upon which all learning is based. Give children the opportunity to do jobs .. things they love to do.. such as washing dishes, cleaning floors, wiping windows, polishing shoes, peeling apples. Each job is an exercise in motor control, from fine to large. Show them that two is greater than one, that if you have five apples and you give two to your friends, you have three left in your hands .. that if you have one piece of candy and your mom gives you one more you have two... showing them what subtracting and adding is.. the concept.. of making smaller or making larger. This is teaching them the concept of numbers then applying that concept to the figures. Now when they see a figure three they immediately apply it to the concept of what that number stands for. Have them listen to sounds .. then apply those sounds to letters. When they are ready .. reading comes naturally as they put those sounds together.. instead of trying to put the names of the letters together to make words.. which is what happens if the names of the letters are stressed before the sounds. Give them paints .. and large paper.. and allow them to go to town... developing free expression. Show them how the world turns from the sun and toward the sun.. giving us day and night.. how it tips back and forth from the sun.. giving us heat and cold for the seasons. These are all concepts all learning from here on out will be based on. What a great advantage to begin to be esposed to them all at the tender age of three .. and they can be taught right at home! |
