Antebellum Homes.. Charleston, South Carolina
If you enjoy U.S. history, Charleston, South Carolina has the most antebellum homes of any city in the United States.. on cobblestoned streets, with a natural setting that has been carried forward from pre-civil war times. You can experience these homes if you visit Charleston, by reserving a room in any of a number that are maintained as Bed and Breakfast homes. The houses are magnificent, with their 12 foot or higher ceilings, the carriage houses extending off the back of the homes, the broad piazzas (porches) that all face the ocean, the great ballrooms and parlors and kitchens, the wonderful creaking entry gates. Sit on the piazza in the heat of the evening and catch the breeze wafting from the harbor. The piazzas were all built on the south side of the homes in order to do just that.. catch the ocean breezes in the heat of the high summer days, as their of course was no air conditioning at the time they were built. To visit one of these homes is to offer yourself a special treat. If you go, notice the large parlor windows which open up onto the piazzas, all the way down to the floor, acting as a door for those special balls. Don't miss the woodwork which is definitely works of art, indoor and out. Walk through the carriage house, all the way to the back where the carriages of old were once kept. Open up the exquisitely squeaking gate and step onto the coobbled or stone street and you will almost see the women of old in their colorful hooped dresses as they stroll down the sidewalk... and hear the squeals of the children as they play with their hoops and balls on the street as the horsedrawn carriages clatter by. It is a magical place that you should not miss if at all possible. It is true living American history. |
